Melissa McCarthy has revealed that she couldn’t get a designer to make her a dress for the Oscars. She says that she approached several high profile names and each one turned her down, so she was fueled by the rejection to turn to design for herself. The actress, who now has her own plus-sized line and often dresses herself for the red carpet, comments that designers just refused to work with her at the time:
“Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers, very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people, and they all said no.”
Melissa admits it can be a difficult task to dress her figure, and says it is “near impossible” to find something that actually looks tasteful and makes her look her age. She explained:
“Trying to find stuff that’s still fashion-forward in my size is damn near impossible. It’s either for like a 98-year-old woman or a 14-year-old hooker, and there is nothing in the middle.”
The actress always aspired to work in fashion and initially considered attending FIT when she first arrived in New York City, but fate had other plans for her and she ended up going in to comedy instead:
“[I] always thought I would design women’s clothing, Then [I] ended up in New York thinking I was going to go to FIT [the Fashion Institute of Technology], and I started doing standup. So how A went to B, I don’t know!”
