Elle’s May issue celebrates “Women in Music,” starting with cover girls Adele, Alicia Keys, and Rita Ora. The spotlight shines a little brighter on British pop star Rita Ora though, who stars on not one, but two separate covers for the magazine’s issue.
On her first cover, Ora poses in a pink Chanel Haute Couture gown, oversized pink headpiece by Ken O’Rourke, long black leather gloves, and thigh-high black leather boots to match.
The second cover shows 22-year-old Ora in a Calvin Klein gown, large glittery Philip Treacy headpiece with ears, and black whiskers drawn around her nose. Elle Creative Director Joe Zee said Rita “kept Instagramming selfies” during the shoot to capture her “Mickey Mouse gear!” “Not many people get so excited to have their picture taken in whiskers – Rita definitely has a special aura,” Zee continues.
Ora opens up about everything from her style to her career to meeting her idols within the publication. When she was a child, she was “completely mesmerized” by the Spice Girls. She only watched them the, but says it now “feels great to meet someone who is not human, but is.” Who was another one of her idols that she was in awe of upon their first meeting? Jay-Z! She never though she’d fly to New York to “meet one of the biggest music moguls of our time,” but the rapper was obviously just as taken with Ora and she was with him. He ended up signing her to his label after that 2009 meeting.
She’s seemingly more comfortable around Jay-Z now, as she insists she doesn’t let her record label dictate what music she makes. “That should never be allowed! It’s like somebody telling you what to sing,” Ora says. The singer is also assertive when it comes to what she wants to wear. When she first saw the red Marchesa dress she ultimately wore to the MTV Europe Music Awards, she knew she needed it. The singer walked right up to Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman and said, “I have your dress as the screen saver on my phone. This red dress needs to be on my body.” At least she knows what she wants!
