The black dress: we all have at least one and sometimes it can feel like a boring outfit choice – but there are countless ways to style a classic black dress, and it just takes a little thought to give the look a revamp and make it look fresh and modern. Here are a few styling ideas to get you started.

Outerwear – what you wear over your look makes a big difference. Be it a coat, jacket, waistcoat or cardigan, think about how your outerwear choice will change your ensemble and it’s overall style. If you throw on a fringe cardigan like the look below, it will give a black dress a boho twist. Add a leather biker jacket, and you’ve got a rock’n’roll combination. A boxy peacoat in a contrasting or colourful shade will look modern and striking.

Accessories – the final touches you add to your black dress can also be significant. Add trainers to give it an urban, street cool twist for day. Heels and an envelope clutch will look elegant and dressy, while gladiator sunglasses and and sunglasses are summertime cool. Try to add a new accessory to your black dress to give it a different twist that you might not usually opt for.

Colour – since black is such a classic and refined colour, it gives you a blank canvas to play with. Adding white will create a graphic contrasting look, while a primary shade such as red, blue or green will add a bright focal point. A nude or dove grey will look minimal and on-trend.

The best way to find new ideas is to go through your existing wardrobe and try on different combinations until you stumble on something you like.
