It seems like every fashion designer who didn’t already have a cosmetics collection is launching one now! Michael Kors is the next designer to hop on the bandwagon with a beauty line that’ll launch in August.
The collection, which was produced in collaboration with Estée Lauder, will include three distinct lines to represent the brand – Sporty, Sexy, and Glam. The Sporty line will includes nudes and taupes, the Sexy line will include various shades of red and scarlet, and the Glam line will be made up of plum and violet shades. “Those three things – sexy, sporty, and glam – have always been the DNA of Michael Kors, and in a strange way, the Michael Kors woman really is all three of those things – it’s just that she feels more strongly about one of them at certain given times,” says Kors.
Aside from the woman he imagines embodies his brand, Kors also took inspiration from all the important women in his life, including his mother and his grandmother. His grandmother was “over-the-top glam” and “worshipped at the altar of Elizabeth Taylor,” so she inspired the glam collection. On the other hand, his mother “wore very natural makeup, very little print, was very laid-back and relaxed,” so she fell on the sportier end of the spectrum.
Each of the lines will include a fragrance, two Lip Lacquer shades, two Lip Luster glosses, and two nail polishes in colors that represent the collection’s varying themes. The prices will range from $18 for a bottle of nail polish to $95 for 3.4 ounces of a fragrance. In addition to the makeup, Kors will also introduce a full line of bronzing and self-tanning products, including Bronze Powders, a Bronze Powder Brush, Body Crème, Liquid Shimmer Dry Oil, Shimmer Bath Beads, Liquid Self Tanner, and After Sun Lip Balm.
All of Kors’ beauty products will be sold exclusively at Michael Kors’ stores and Macy’s for the first year following the launch. All of 660 Macy’s locations in the U.S. will stock the products, while only certain Michael Kors’ locations will stock the whole range of products. The other stores will carry only a limited selection of the line.
No beauty basics like foundation and mascara will be included in the collection because Kors only “wanted to do the essentials – the things you absolutely have to have to represent that mood.” He believes cosmetics should be treated like accessories, so he focused on the colors and bronzing products.
Kors plans to market his new venture in beauty heavily. A television commercial and online interactive video starring Karmen Pedaru dancing to Duran Duran’s “Girls on Film” have already been filmed. Print ads also featuring the model were shot by Mario Testino too.
Michael Kors has already established an impressive fashion empire, so there’s no doubt his move into cosmetics will be just as successful as everything else he has done. What do you think of Kors’ new beauty products? Which of the lines do you identify with the most?
