‘New Girl’ actress Zooey Deschanel has spoken on how she used to be able to satisfy her craving for fashion despite being on a limited budget as a teenager. Zooey says her parents wouldn’t always give her money to buy new clothing so she would have to wait until she was given the cash and she began to resort to designing for herself instead. Zooey commented on how she got creative:

”My parents wouldn’t let my buy clothes willy-nilly. We’d get new clothes maybe twice a year, just practical things, so I started making them myself.”

Zooey would fit fabrics on to her body and sew them up to create her own fashion pieces so she could still express her style even without a clothing budget. She says she even once used a Christmas stocking to make a special dress:

”I would sort of fit things on myself and then sew them together. I remember taking fabric my mom had used to make a Christmas stocking, but I made a red dress out of it, with white eyelet trim, for a friend’s birthday party.”

Zooey says she likes her fashion choices because she believes her own style always makes her look like “herself” which she thinks is something that doesn’t change, no matter what she is wearing:

”Whatever you put me in, I still look like myself. If someone wants to look good and is a little more modest, they can see some examples of how to do that in what I wear.”
