Alexander Wang’s career continues to reach new heights. The New York based designer has not only recently landed a new role as creative director for Parisian fashion house Balenciaga, but he is also taking his namesake label to the high street with a new collaboration collection for H&M. Opening up on his changing career, Wang commented on his highly secretive hiring at Balenciaga, commenting that they had to close down the security before he visited to keep the news private:

“They had to shut down the security cameras.”

Wang admits that he almost turned down the job, but a trip to the company’s archives changed his mind and inspired him to work with the company:

“Seeing the archive in person, as a creative person when you see something like that it puts sparks into you. It kind of just triggered me. It really inspired me to think about it.”

Staying quiet about the details of his H&M collection, Wang comments that it will be something new:

“It will be a new approach that they haven’t done before.”

The designer says it hasn’t all been easy – he took a big risk beginning his own label after leaving design school and believes in having fun along the way:

“When I left school, it was taking a risk. … A big part of our brand is having fun. I think it’s interesting to try new things and play in new fields. It’s an industry and it’s a craft and it’s a part of everyone’s life, whether it’s intentional or not.”
