UK department store Debenhams has decided to represent different sizes fairly by using mannequins that are size 16 UK or US 12. Hoping to show that people come in different sizes, and as the size they’ve selected is the average size in the UK, they believe they’ve selected a fair representation of women who will be shopping in their stores in the future. Making a brave step forward, the company has big plans for their new mannequins and hope to have them placed in all of their stores in the near future.

They don’t believe that they should be showing clothes on a mannequin that isn’t the average size – the standard mannequin comes as a UK10.

A representative for the company commented:

“The average British woman is a size 16, but the high street has been showing them clothing on a mannequin that is three sizes smaller – until now. Having worked on this project for three years, we hope that it will help people in some small way to feel comfortable about their bodies and, crucially, that other retailers will follow.”

The new mannequins will first appear at Debenhams Oxford branch in London, with plans to later use them in all of their 17o UK stores.
